Amaechi Calls For Sanctions For Service Failure

The Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has said that the only way Nigeria can make progress in terms of efficient and effective service delivery is to apply sanctions for service failures.

Amaechi who made this call today when the National Coordinator, Servicom, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli paid him an advocacy visit in Abuja, reiterated that Servicom should rechannel their efforts towards attitudinal change to work, especially as it relates to civil servants.

“It is important that we reform ourselves first before looking in at the system holistically”. Adding that the Nigerian culture which hitherto abhorred cheating and corruption has been eroded by get-rich-quick-by-any-means mentality and hoped that Servicom will be able to bring about a reorientation of our value system.

In her presentation, the National Coordinator, Servicom, Mrs. Akajemeli, stated that the Open Government Partnership (OGP) is a global coalition of reformers instituted to fight corruption and ensure an innovative driven system, zero tolerance to corruption, transparency and improved service delivery to citizens.

The ministry was among seven other ministries selected for the National Action Plan ii (2019-2021) with a view to developing and implementing service standards.

Representative of Civil Society speaking stated that they are ready to work with the state actors and their efforts shouldn’t be deemed as one of witch hunt but rather mission of improving on service delivery.

Welcoming the advocacy team, the Director, Road Transport and Mass Transit, Dr. Anthonia Ekpa, affirmed that the Honourable Minister is a reform and change agent and thus believes that all the necessary modalities to achieving the thematic areas of fiscal transparency, access to information, citizen’s engagement/empowerment, inclusiveness and improved service delivery would be realized by the ministry.

The Director, Reform Coordination of the ministry thanked the minister for his time and promised the visiting Servicom team that they look forward to working with them and coming up with reform content for the ministry.
