Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, has decried decried the poor and unhealthy relationships existing between Governing Boards and their Chief Executive Officers.
He described the development as ‘very worrisome’ to Government and unacceptable.
Mustapha, made this known at an Induction Programme for Chairmen and Members of Governing Boards of Parastatals inaugurated by the Federal Government, in Abuja.
The SGF said: “This could be avoided if Chairmen and Members of Governing Boards acquaint themselves with the instruments of establishment of their respective organisations, where the role and responsibilities of the Board are prescribed. Equally relevant in this regard are the following referrals authorities and other relevant Government circulars that are to guide the conduct of public officers.”
According to Mustapha, Governing Boards and Chief Executive Officers of Federal Parastatals and others who run them must remain worthy of the trust reposed in them by their respective appointments.
He said: “First, there must be a sustained and committed leadership that embodies the core values of good governance.”
The Director General, Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Mr. Ibrahim Arabi said that the primary objective of the induction is to enable Governing Boards Members gain understanding of their roles.
Arabi added that the induction was for the board members to know how to contribute effectively to promote corporate governance practice in their Agencies.
This will help them know their key responsibilities and the behaviours required of them in their respective organisations, both as individuals and as part of board’s collective responsibility: he said
Dr. Vladimir Kreck, Resident Representative of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), said that the good governance translate everywhere, there internalised and applied by government actors into respect for the rule of law, transparency, accountability, equality and efficiency.
Prince Clem Ikanade Agba, the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, in a goodwill message, disclosed that i-monitoring is to be introduced in government websites to enable Nigerian’s post pictures of projects status vis-a-vis the cash released.
