The Federal Government has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Councils for Federal Universities, Polytechnic, and Colleges of Education.
During the ceremony, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, urged the Councils to uphold the rule of law and emphasized the importance of adhering to existing laws and regulations to ensure good management and accountability within their institutions. He stressed transparency in appointing Principal Officers and addressing social issues like cultism, drug abuse, and sexual harassment. Prof. Mamman highlighted the need for collaboration with the private sector to tackle funding challenges and called for responsible unionism and tackling issues such as illegal instit6utions and certificate racketeering.
Prof. Mamman outlined the Education Roadmap during his keynote address, aiming to provide equitable access to quality education for all Nigerians, targeting 2 million Youths annually with affordable Tertiary Education. He announced a comprehensive census of Schools, teach6ers, and Students to guide decision-making and resource allocation.
Hon. Dr. Yusuf Tanko Sununu, Minister of State for Education, reiterated the administration’s dedication to quality Education through the Renewed Hope Agenda and expressed confidence in the Councils members’ potential to drive progress. Wole Olanipekun, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, emphasized the need for effective Educational tools and robust responses to challenges, advocating for significant changes in the Educational sector.
Concluding the event, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, extended gratitude to all attendees and thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Honourable Minister for their roles in approving and leading the Councils. She appreciated the dedication of Council members, the support of guests, partners, and the media, and recognized the planning committee’s efforts.
