The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, has called on the international community, development partners, and the private sector to support Nigeria in its efforts to find lasting solutions to the significant water-related challenges the country is currently facing.
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, FNSE FNICE FNIWE, made this appeal on Sunday, 11th August 2024, at the International Water Association (IWA) 2024 World Water Congress & Exhibition in Toronto, Canada.
The Minister emphasized that although Nigeria is blessed with abundant resources, these resources are under immense pressure due to population growth, urbanization, and climate change. He therefore highlighted that these challenges must be addressed to achieve sustainable development, economic growth, and human well-being.
He posited that these challenges threaten Nigeria’s food security, public health, economic stability, and environmental sustainability, further complicating water availability, leading to both scarcity and flooding.
Prof. Utsev further disclosed that in recognition of the critical role water plays in sustainable development, economic growth, and ensuring water security, Nigeria is implementing far-reaching National strategies and initiatives. These include the National Water Resources Master Plan, the National WASH Policy, and the Partnership for Expanded Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene (PEWASH) programs, all of which align with SDG Goal 6 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.
He underscored the importance of advancing water research and innovation, ensuring robust water governance and management, promoting water education and awareness, and supporting transboundary cooperation through knowledge sharing, technologies, and resources. These efforts, he said, are essential to building a more water-secure world for all.
