The Federal Government has urged stakeholders in the water sector to come together and protect drinking water sources and promote sustainable water resources management.
The Acting Executive Director, Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC), Mrs. Sakinatu Suleiman Abbo Jimeta while declaring open the workshop on ‘Protection of Drinking Water Resources in Nigeria’ with the theme: ‘Access to Clean Water and Improved Sanitation: The Place of Regulation and Management’ made the urge in Abuja.
She said protecting drinking water resources in Nigeria is crucial for safeguarding public health, supporting economic development, maintaining environmental integrity and ensuring long term water security for the growing population.
Speaking during the workshop, Jimeta said that access to clean water and improved sanitation is a fundamental human right that affects everyone.
“As we all know, Nigeria’s Water Resources are facing numerous challenges. Over 57% of our population relies on untreated water sources, and climate change is aggravating this issue. Our Commission is committed to ensuring Nigeria’s transboundry water resources are protected and managed effectively,” she said.
The Acting Executive Director explained that “effective regulation and management are crucial to ensuring access to clean water and improved sanitation. This workshop aims to sensitize stakeholders on the importance of protecting drinking water sources and promote best practices in water resources management.”
The Director, Corporate Support Services of the Commission, Mr. Sunday Idowu, said millions of Nigerians lack access to safe drinking water and inadequate sanitation poses significant health risks.
“Our Commission is devoted to regulating, protecting, conserving and managing Nigeria’s water resources for equitable and sustainable social and economic development” he added.
