FIC Report (Kano State) – The Kano State Commissioner of Education, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, has called on newly appointed Local Education Secretaries from the state’s 44 local government areas to demonstrate dedication and discipline in their official duties. Speaking at a meeting held at the SBMC Conference Hall of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), the commissioner emphasized the critical role of Education Secretaries in revitalizing basic education at the grassroots.
Doguwa highlighted that the appointment of Education Secretaries is based on rigorous criteria, reflecting the importance of their responsibilities in restructuring the state’s education system. He urged them to contribute innovative changes that align with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s vision of strengthening both primary and secondary education in Kano State.
The commissioner also revealed that the state government has finalized arrangements for a ₦10 billion education reform initiative. This includes:
- Distribution of over 700,000 school uniforms to primary school pupils.
- Provision of 1,500 computers and 1.2 million books to schools.
- Offering soft loans to 1,000 teachers to enhance their welfare and productivity.
Furthermore, Doguwa announced plans for an Education Secretaries’ monitoring exercise to ensure effective oversight of schools, with adequate logistical support to local education authorities. He stressed the importance of merit-based staff postings and encouraged sincerity in decision-making.
In his remarks, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Malam Kabiru Yusuf, commended Governor Yusuf for his unwavering support of educational initiatives. He acknowledged the administration’s efforts in introducing reforms, such as the screening of head teachers, school support officers, and quality assurance personnel.
Yusuf urged Education Secretaries to collaborate with stakeholders to develop innovative programs that will enhance basic education, reiterating the governor’s commitment to providing the necessary support.
The meeting, which also included Zonal Directors, served as a platform to address challenges and strategies for improving the state’s education sector.
