The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) has concluded arrangements for the commemoration of the annual International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed worldwide every December 3rd with a Walk and National Dialogue.
The event put together to address the challenges faced by the PWDs is also aimed at harnessing opportunities available for the over 25% of persons with disabilities in the global population. In Nigeria, the number of persons with disabilities is estimated to be around 35 million.
The annual event promotes awareness, understanding, and inclusivity for Persons with disabilities; and this year’s marks a significant milestone in the global effort to promote inclusive development, diversity, accessibility, equity, and the rights of persons with disabilities. The Commission and its partners say the 2024 edition is an opportunity to recognize the progress made so far and identify the challenges that lie ahead.
According to the mandate of the Commission, it is to ensure full inclusion of Persons with Disabilities into society in line with global efforts.
To this end, the Commission and its partners are organizing a road walk tagged “Road Walk for Disability Inclusion and national dialogue on “Transformative Solutions for Disability-Inclusive Development in Nigeria”.
The Walk which is to commemorate the 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities takes off at the NCPWD National Headquarters, on Monday, 2nd December, 2024, at 8.00 am and terminates at the Unity Fountain, Shehu Shagari Way, FCT – Abuja.
A National Dialogue on the “Transformative Solutions to Disability – Inclusive Development in Nigeria will follow on Tuesday, 3rd December, 2024 at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
