The Honourable Federal Commissioner addressing the gentleman of the press during the press briefing

This year’s dialogue will feature on two panel discussions with various intellectuals, practitioners, and civil society representatives. These panels will address critical topics, including: Contribution of Migrants to the Socio-Economic Growth of Origin and Destination Countries: This panel will spotlight how migrants’ skills, innovation, and labor contribute to development at home and abroad, while fostering social cohesion and mutual benefits.

Protection of Migrants’ Rights, Access to Information, Decent Work and Documentation: discussion will center on ensuring that migrants are informed, protected, and supported to live and work in dignity, with policies that uphold their rights and prevent exploitation.

The Honourable Federal Commissioner Honourable Tijani Aliyu Ahmed stated this during the press briefing with the theme: “Beyond Borders: Celebrating Migrants’ Legacy, Protecting Their Rights”, on Friday in his office in Abuja.

According to him, this will bring together policymakers, migration experts, civil society organizations, academia and key stakeholders to deliberate on the theme that resonates with our national priorities and aligns with the global agenda for International Migrants day.

He hinted that, under the Renewed Hope of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights of migrants, refugees, and internally displaced persons. This dialogue serves as a platform to highlight the government’s initiatives aimed at addressing the challenges of irregular migration, fostering regular migration pathways, and equipping migrants with the skills and knowledge needed to make meaningful contributions to national and global development.

This year’s theme underscores the priceless contributions of migrants to socio-economic development in both their countries of origin and destination. It also emphasizes the urgent need to safeguard their rights, provide access to decent work, ensure accurate information, and facilitate safe and dignified migration pathways.

He also mentioned that, this year’s dialogue served as an opportunity for Nigeria to showcase it preparedness and commitment as we take up the chairmanship of the Rabat Process in 2025. All stakeholders in migration space must contribute to ensure the success of this presidency, from which Nigeria is expected to obtain significant benefits, including enhanced partnership, capacity building and policy coherence.
