FIC Report (Edo State) – The Nigerian Senator representing Edo South Senatorial District, Senator Neda, has reiterated the essential role that Nigerian women play in the sustainance of the society, and therefore, canvassed joint efforts as a nation to eliminate harassment, discrimination, and all forms of injustice directed at women.

In his remarks to honor International Women’s Day, Senator Imasuen, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, underscored the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women in Nigeria.

He stated, “Good day to the remarkable women of Edo State and Nigeria. Yesterday, we celebrated International Women’s Day—a day dedicated to recognizing the strength and significant roles of women throughout our nation and beyond.”

“Women are the foundation of our families, the catalysts of our economy, and the leaders influencing our future.”

Imasuen emphasized that women’s sacrifices and accomplishments deserve not just recognition but meaningful action—action aimed at empowering, protecting, and providing them with the opportunities they rightfully deserve.

“As we celebrate, it is crucial to understand that genuine progress requires fairness, justice, and accountability. Every woman should feel safe, valued, and respected throughout all aspects of her life.”

He stressed that national unity is vital in the effort to eliminate harassment and discrimination against women, while also upholding the principle of fairness in justice, which mandates that both parties in any issue must be given a chance to be heard.

“Justice cannot be one-sided; due process must be upheld for both the accuser and the accused. Each allegation must be treated seriously, but it is imperative that it is properly investigated and substantiated before reaching conclusions. This is the standard of fairness we must all adhere to.”

Furthermore, Senator Imasuen addressed the recent suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagha, emphasizing that the Senate must embody fairness, integrity, and accountability as core principles

“I recognize that recent developments in the Senate have prompted much discussion. Last week, my committee made recommendations concerning misconduct within the Senate.”

“While these may not be popular opinions, they were made to uphold the rules that govern our institutions. Accountability must be enforced for everyone, regardless of gender, when regulations are breached.”

He clarified that the sexual allegations against Akpoti-Uduagha fall outside the Ethics Committee’s jurisdiction since they are being handled by the courts.

“Our committee focused solely on assessing her conduct on the Senate floor and did not address the harassment allegations made against the Senate President.”

He continued, “Our decisions aim to maintain the Senate’s integrity, rather than engage in external matters. Holding individuals accountable within the Senate reinforces the principles of fairness and responsibility, applying equally to all.”

While he acknowledged the political discussions surrounding these events, Senator Imasuen reiterated that International Women’s Day transcends politics—it is a global celebration of women.

“Today is not about politics; it’s about honoring the strength, grace, and resilience of women. To every woman who is listening: You are strong, capable, and unstoppable. No barrier is too high, and no challenge is too daunting for you to conquer.”

He encouraged women to recognize their worth, affirming their dreams and invaluable contributions to the nation.

“On this International Women’s Day, let us commit to fostering a future where women are not only honored but genuinely empowered, not merely included but given a voice at the table.”

Senator Imasuen concluded with a call for unified efforts to cultivate a society that champions the interests of all.

“Together, let us advocate for fairness, justice, and opportunities for everyone,” he stated.
