FIC Report (Enugu State) – Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has revealed plans to establish an intra-rail system that will connect major rail lines with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), a move aimed at enhancing trade and boosting economic activities in the state.
Mbah made the announcement during a meeting with the Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, and other members of the NRC management team at the Government House in Enugu on Thursday. He explained that the initiative was necessary to support efforts by the state and neighbouring regions to create a common market and facilitate smoother trade, with seamless rail transport playing a key role.
The governor expressed his enthusiasm about the NRC’s efforts to revitalise the national rail network, specifically the Eastern Railway Corridor, a project endorsed by President Bola Tinubu earlier in the year during his visit to Enugu. Mbah pledged the state’s support in ensuring the optimal operation of the NRC’s clinic and in protecting the corporation’s assets from vandalism and encroachment.
Earlier in the day, Opeifa reaffirmed the NRC’s commitment to the completion of the Enugu-Port Harcourt railway project, a top priority for the federal government. He emphasised the importance of cooperation between the NRC and Enugu State, highlighting how the state’s infrastructural developments, including transport terminals, align with the corporation’s strategic goals.
