FIC Report (Rivers State) – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has intensified preparations for the 2025 World Press Freedom Day with its Planning Committee holding a second strategic meeting aimed at ensuring a memorable and impactful celebration.

Kicking off activities, the Committee announced that media sensitization tours will begin on Monday, April 28, 2025, across selected media platforms. The tours will sensitize journalists, media stakeholders, and the public on the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism and the increasing importance of fact-checking tools in upholding press integrity.

Speaking after the meeting, Chairman of the Planning Committee, Pastor Paul Damgbor, assured that this year’s programme would be a landmark event. He emphasized the Committee’s commitment to delivering a well-coordinated and enriching experience that would not only celebrate press freedom but also empower journalists with modern tools and knowledge.

“The world is changing, and so is journalism,” Pastor Damgbor stated. “A series of activities have been lined up to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day. Notably, a ‘Freedom Walk’ is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 8:00 a.m., followed by a Symposium at 10:00 a.m. the same day, both aimed at commemorating the occasion and deepening conversations around press freedom.”

As part of the build-up to the main event, veteran journalists and media professionals will appear on various radio and television talk shows to discuss the theme, activities, and relevance of press freedom in today’s media landscape. These appearances aim to boost public awareness and encourage wide participation across all media houses in the state.

Recall that the Planning Committee, inaugurated during the maiden Congress of the Rivers State Council of the NUJ, comprises five members: Pastor Paul Damgbor as Chairman, Chief Titus Eze as Vice Chairman, Dr. Helen Nsirim as Secretary, and Obubelebara Parker and Benson Finebone as members.

This year’s celebration is themed: “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”

The NUJ calls on all journalists and media stakeholders to actively participate in the upcoming activities and contribute to a successful commemoration of World Press Freedom Day 2025.
