Tomorrow's Teachers, Today's Commitments: FG To Strengthen Colleges With Funding, PPPs — MINISTER

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming teacher education in Nigeria, with a focus on sustainable funding, public-private partnerships (PPPs), and policy reforms to drive institutional growth.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Ahmad, made this known in Abuja during a two-day workshop organized by the Committee of Chairmen of Federal Colleges of Education. She emphasized that strong governance and strategic planning are essential to the future of teacher education.

“We are laying a solid foundation by ensuring our Colleges of Education are not only well-funded but also governed by dynamic structures and partnerships,” she said. “The quality of teachers we produce today will shape the nation’s future.”

Professor Ahmad outlined the government’s approach, which includes:

Increasing and stabilizing funding for Colleges of Education;

Encouraging private sector collaboration to foster innovation and resource mobilization;

Strengthening policies that promote transparency and accountability in teacher training institutions.

She stressed the importance of education in national development and called for collective action from all stakeholders to build a competent and motivated teaching workforce.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), Prof. Paulinus Chijioke Okwelle, underscored the need for strategic leadership and effective governance in Federal Colleges of Education. He urged governing councils and stakeholders to act decisively to improve institutional frameworks.

The workshop brought together policymakers, administrators, and stakeholders to chart a new course for teacher education, focusing on innovation, quality, and national service.
