FIC Report (Ebonyi State) – David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) Uburu has successfully scaled the accreditation exercise for residency training programme in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The Faculty Board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) gave the clearance today after a facility inspection tour, which certified the hospital’s facilities as suitable for the programme.
The leader of the accreditation visitation panel and Chairman of the Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, NPMCN Professor Ayodeji Oluwole , commended the hospital for its cleanliness, structure, and level of organization.
Despite being barely two years old, DUFUTH impressed the panel with its facilities, with only a few areas requiring attention and restructuring.
Professor Oluwole promised to work with the hospital’s management to address these grey areas and advised DUFUTH to enroll in the Medical Residency Training Fund once the accreditation is formally communicated by the Registrar.
The Chief Medical Director of DUFUTH, Professor Uzoma Agwu, expressed gratitude for the accreditation and promised to implement all necessary improvements in record time.
She noted that most of the infrastructural gaps and requests were captured in the 2025 budget and would be implemented once the budget is activated.
Professor Agwu also announced plans to pursue accreditation for residency training in other departments, including Paediatrics, Radiology, and Family Medicine.
The Faculty Secretary, Professor Odidika Umeora, highlighted areas that require improvement, including ensuring that all service points at the Mother and Child Care Centre are emergency-ready.
He also recommended additional bed facilities at the gynaecology ward, restructuring of call rooms for lodging and academic convenience, provision of multiple patient stretchers, wheelchairs, suction machines and transport incubators, and further advocated for a convenient workspace for the Head of Department and the Chief Resident Officer.
