Humanitarian Ministry Committed To Addressing Critical Challenges Facing Families And Communities In The Society - Dr Kofarmata

The Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Yakubu Adam Kofarmata has said that the Ministry is committed to addressing the critical challenges facing families and communities in the society.

The Permanent Secretary stated this during the one- day capacity building workshop organized by the Department of Social Development of the Ministry for staff on Professional Social Case Management for settling Marital and Family Disputes, held on Wednesday 28th May, 2025, in Abuja.

Speaking through the Director Planning, Research and Statistics, Oyinloye Adeola, the Permanent Secretary said “the family as the bedrock of society, plays pivotal role in shaping value behaviors and attitudes and define our collective future. However, the realities of modern life have introduced complexities that place significant strain on Marital and Family relationships. Against this backdrop, the need for professional intervention mechanism to address Marital and Family Disputes cannot be overemphasized.

“It is imperative that we equip our social welfare professionals with necessary tools, skills and knowledge to mediate, resolve, and manage such Disputes effectively, ensuring that the family unit remains a source of stability and strength”.

He said the initiative aligns with the vision of Mr President as articulated in the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Dr Kofarmata urged the participants to engage actively, share insights and collaborate with one another. Adding the the knowledge acquired should not end in the hall but translated into actionable solutions that positively impact the lives of their families.

The Director Social Development Mr Valentine Ezulu in his welcome address, disclosed that the workshop is designed to equip social welfare practitioners with the requisite skills and knowledge to effectively manage marital and family disputes.” It focuses on practical strategies and evidence – based approaches that are culturally relevant to our society. By enhancing your capacity as social workers, mediators and advocates, we aim to strengthen the support systems available to families in distress and foster harmonious relationships within our communities”.

Ezulu Expressed appreciation to the Honourable Minister and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for their support towards the hosting of the workshop.

Dr Alexander, Federal University of Lafiya made two paper presentations on “Integrating Cultural Sensitivity in Family Disputes Management: Challenges and Opportunities”; and “Stress Management and Emotional Resilience for Case Officers: Tools for Balancing Work and Family Demands”, while Dr Stanley Augustine Kavwan presented on “Principles and Ethics of Social Case Management in Marital and Family Disputes”.

Present at the programme were the Directors of the Ministry, participants drawn from various departments and Units, facilitators among others.
