The House Committee on Disability, led by its Chairman, Hon. Bashiru Daudu, today carried out an oversight visit to the headquarters of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in Abuja.
The oversight function, in line with Section 88 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, empowers the National Assembly to evaluate the activities and performance of government agencies. This visit focused on assessing the Commission’s progress in promoting and protecting the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs).
During the engagement, Hon. Bashiru Daudu emphasized the importance of the Commission staying true to its vision and mission. He reminded the management team of the years of advocacy, struggle, and protest that culminated in the passage of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act in 2018, and the subsequent establishment of the NCPWD in 2020.
“We are here to assess the Commission’s effectiveness in implementing relevant laws and policies, to identify challenges, and to provide recommendations for improved performance,” said Hon. Daudu.
The Committee commended the Commission’s ongoing efforts in advocating for disability rights and inclusive welfare. However, it also identified key areas needing improvement and reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate closely with the Commission to enhance its impact nationwide.
In his remarks, Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, Hon. Ayuba Gufwan, expressed gratitude to the House Committee for its steadfast support and dedication to the wellbeing of PWDs in Nigeria. He reiterated his commitment to leading the Commission in the spirit of inclusion and equality.
“We are currently working on the establishment of zonal offices and exploring additional welfare strategies for persons with disabilities in all 36 states of the Federation. Our aim is to ensure that no one is left behind,” Hon. Gufwan stated.
Both the House Committee on Disability and the NCPWD reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to ensuring that the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities are protected, promoted, and upheld throughout Nigeria.
