The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has presented 330 laptops to female students in selected Federal Colleges as part of efforts to boost girl-child education in the country.
The Minister, represented by the Director, ICT, Mr. Ifegwu Kalu Oji, speaking while distributing the Laptops to the representatives of the schools in Abuja on Monday, October 30, 2017, stated that in demonstration of his commitment towards the attainment of the National and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDDs), the President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, approved the provision of laptops for Girl-Child in selected Federal Unity Colleges, as well as the training of principals and teachers on classroom Management using ICT .
The benefiting schools are: FGC Minna, FGC IKot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom State, FGC kano, FGC Ikole, Ekiti State, FGC Azare, Bauchi State and FGC Ohafia, Abia State.
According to him, the Federal Government hopes that this programme will fast track the achievement of SDGs, Universal Basic Education and gender equality by attracting more girls to school.
“Our goal is to ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning and gender equality by attracting more,” he said.
The Minister said that government working towards ensuring that the entire education sector embrace the use of the new technologies to meet the human resource requirements of the nation for attaining sustainable socio-economic development, global competitiveness as well as the individual’s ability to survive in the in contemporary environment.
He noted that the task achieve the set goal is enormous, and urged stakeholders in the education sector to partner with government in implementing the programmes to salvage the education system towards attainment of sustainable development.
Earlier, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope Adefulire said the distribution of the laptops was in-line with the present administration goal to enhance the education of the Girl-Child in the country.
Adefulire who was represented by Mr. Laminu Waziri, urged students to take advantage of the laptops as it would facilitate classroom learning and encourage active participation of the learners.
She added that the office in partnership with the Ministry of Education was committed to investing and supporting high impact interventions targeted at improving Girl-Child Education and gender equality.
Also, Mrs. Uwen Asomugha, Desk Officer, ICT SDGs in the ministry, stated that the organization identified specific gaps in the schools which prompted an appeal for support to provide laptops in the schools.
