Federal Ministry of Education has taken a significant step towards repositioning Universities and Tertiary Institution to meet National and global expectations by inaugurating committee members of governing council of some Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria.
The formal inauguration which was performed on 1st July, 2025 in Abuja by the Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, CON further emphasized the Government’s commitment to revitalize Tertiary Institutions through increased investment in infrastructure, development of Solar Energy, solutions to enhance campus power supply, improvement in staff welfare, expansion to qualify Tertiary education and fostering a sustainable achievement in the Education Sector.
Addressing the committee members and stakeholders, the Minister stressed the critical role of government in providing quality education to Nigerian citizens.
He noted that establishment of the committee must go hand in hand with accountability.
“Let me also remind you that University autonomy must go hand in hand with accountability, transparency in procurement, budgeting, appointment and contract award must be non-negotiable. You are to serve as custodians of public and government will not hesitate to take appropriate action where there are breeches of responsibility”, he said.
The Minister urged them to have a good working relationship with University management team.
“I urge you to work closely with the University management team especially the Vice-Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts in a manner that is supportive but not intrusive”, he noted.
He affirmed that the Committee members were carefully selected based on their expertise, experience and commitment. He therefore said that the assignment is of national importance and should be approached with utmost dedication.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the newly appointed members of the governing council of selected Federal Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad congratulated the appointees on their well deserved selection on the Governing Council of the great institutions, adding that the event is a milestone in the collective journey to strengthen governance and accountability within the Federal Tertiary Institutions.
Professor Ahmad noted that while their mandate is to provide oversight and strategic direction, it must be done with collaboration, mutual respect and adherence to due process.
“The ministry on its part will continue to work closely with the Universities and their governing councils to address systematic challenges, including funding, infrastructure, industrial harmony, research capability and employable graduates,” she assured.
Responding on behalf of the appointees, the Chairman of Governing Council of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and former Governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umaru Tanko Al -Makura said that they are highly privileged to be considered to serve as Council members, pledged to work with the Ministry to achieve the desired goal.
Almakura assured the Minister that the confidence reposed in them will not be betrayed.
In his vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary Mr Abel Eniitan Olumuyiwa was represented by Director of Reform and Coordination Dr Saeed Yusuf expressed his gratitude for the inauguration of the Council Committee members. He also commended the stakeholders who have contributed in planning for the success of the event.
