FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State House of Assembly has amended the law renaming the state-owned university in Makurdi. The institution, which was earlier changed from Benue State University to Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University in December 2024, will now be known as Father Adasu University, Makurdi.
The amendment followed a debate on the report of the House Committee on Higher Education during plenary. Majority Leader, Hon. Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa), argued that the previous name was unnecessarily long.
In the same sitting, the Assembly also passed bills upgrading the Colleges of Education in Katsina-Ala and Oju into degree-awarding institutions.
Presiding over the session, Speaker Rt. Hon. Alfred Emberga directed the Clerk of the House, Dr. Bem Mela, to read the bills for the third time, after which they were passed.
It would be recalled that Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia had earlier championed the move for the university to bear Adasu’s name in honour of the late former governor who established the institution.
Meanwhile, during plenary, the House dissolved its principal officers and reconstituted new ones as follows:
Hon. Thomas Dugeri – Majority Leader
Hon. Abraham Jabi – Deputy Majority Leader
Hon. Cyril Ikong – Majority Chief Whip
Hon. Simon Gabo – Deputy Majority Whip
Hon. Abu Umoro – Minority Leader
Hon. Cephase Dyako – Deputy Minority Leader
Hon. Samuel Jiji – Minority Whip
Hon. Moses Egbodo – Deputy Minority Whip
