National Identity Day 2025 Abia State Marks the Future of Secure Digital Identity

FIC Report (Abia State) – Abia State joined the rest of the country to commemorate the National Identity Day Celebration with a vibrant sensitization walk and an inspiring call for all Nigerians to secure their National Identification Number (NIN).

The Abia State Coordinator of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Ukpabi Eni led the campaign and urged every Nigerian who has not yet enrolled to visit the nearest registration center without delay.

“Identity is key to development,” he said. “Without a National Identification Number, citizens can not access essential government services. NIN remains critical for obtaining an international passport, registering SIM cards, securing government employment, and participating in community development projects.”

Mr. Eni reminded the public that the federal government set aside this day to promote unity and underscore that a secure national identity underpins Nigeria’s growth and service delivery.

Delivering the guest lecture on the theme “Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and Information Security,” Lady Gloria Abiakam, State Head, Federal Information Centre (FIC) Abia, described the NIN project as “the backbone of Nigeria’s digital future.”

She explained that Public Key Infrastructure provides the framework of encryption, authentication, and digital signatures that safeguard every transaction tied to the NIN.

“PKI ensures that sensitive information—citizen data, government records, financial transactions—remains confidential and tamper-proof,” she said.

“With PKI, every NIN-linked service—banking, healthcare, e-governance—can verify identity with confidence.”

Lady Abiakam highlighted the Nigerian PKI, operated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), as a standardized Certification Authority that secures electronic exchanges nationwide. She called on all stakeholders to:

  1. Adopt PKI solutions across digital services.
  2. Prioritize cybersecurity training and public awareness.
  3. Support full NIN enrolment, noting that “a secure identity ecosystem is only as strong as its participation.”

“Protecting our national data is a shared responsibility and a national imperative,” she emphasized, urging collective resolve to make Nigeria’s identity infrastructure a model for Africa and the world.

Representing the Zonal Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) Southeast, Mr. Ndubisi Alozie reinforced the message, warning that without a NIN, Nigerians risk exclusion from critical social amenities and federal benefits.

“Enroll today to secure access to the full range of government services,” he advised, encouraging citizens to view NIN registration as both a civic duty and a gateway to economic opportunities.

The celebration concluded with a shared commitment from NIMC, the Federal Information Centre, and the NOA to protect citizens’ data, foster a trusted digital economy, and ensure that every Nigerian enjoys the benefits of a secure national identity.
