Gov. Okpebholo Urges Dental Professionals to Leverage AI for Better Patient Care

FIC Report (Edo State) – In a compelling call to action, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has urged dental professionals across Nigeria to harness the transformative power of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technological innovations to enhance Patient Care and improve health outcomes.

The Appeal was made during the 19th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontics (NAO), held on Thursday September 25th, 2025 in Benin City. Themed “Embracing Technology and Innovations in Orthodontics: Pioneering the Future,” the Conference brought together leading dental experts to discuss emerging trends and future directions in Orthodontic practice.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, Gov. Okpebholo emphasized that integrating advanced technologies like AI is crucial for Nigeria to keep pace with global healthcare developments. “Technology offers us unprecedented opportunities to diagnose, plan, and deliver treatments more effectively,” he stated. “We must embrace these innovations to provide accessible, affordable, and high-quality Dental Care to all Nigerians.”

He highlighted that orthodontics plays a vital role beyond cosmetic correction, contributing to improved Speech, Nutrition, Confidence, and overall Health. The Governor urged dental practitioners to adopt AI-powered tools that can facilitate early diagnosis of dental and jaw issues, streamline treatment planning, and monitor patient progress more efficiently.

Earlier, Dr. Adeyinka Olayinka, President of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontics, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that orthodontists are pivotal in managing complex cases such as cleft lip and palate, often affecting Vulnerable populations. He called for increased investment in training and infrastructure to ensure that technological advancements reach all regions of Nigeria.

He also expressed optimism about the future Leadership of the Association, wishing success to the incoming President, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, as she prepares to take on her new role. Overall, the Conference highlighted the need for Dental Professionals to embrace Technological Innovations like AI to improve Patient outcomes and expand access to quality Oral Healthcare across Nigeria.

The Conference also featured discussions on making innovative treatments accessible to Low-Income Communities, emphasizing that technology should serve to bridge healthcare gaps rather than widen them. Attendees were encouraged to view AI and other digital tools as essential components of Modern Dental Practice.

In closing, Gov. Okpebholo reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to supporting Healthcare Innovation and urged Dental Professionals to lead the charge in adopting AI for better Patient Outcomes. As Nigeria advances its healthcare system, embracing technology remains a critical step toward ensuring healthier smiles and improved quality of life for all Citizens.
