FIC Report (Edo State) – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced a ₦10 million cash reward for Team Edo following their impressive third-place finish at the 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State.
The Governor made the announcement on Wednesday at Government House, Benin City, where he received the victorious athletes alongside his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa. Team Edo secured a total of 79 medals — 33 gold, 18 silver, and 28 bronze — in what has been described as the state’s best performance in the history of the Games.
Commending the team for their resilience, hard work, and discipline, Governor Okpebholo praised their contribution to the pride and image of Edo State.
“This is an impressive achievement,” the Governor said. “But I challenge you to aim higher. With more commitment and discipline, Edo can and should top the medals table in the next edition. We are proud of you, and we believe greater victories lie ahead.”
He added that the state government remains committed to supporting sports development and would continue to prioritize athletes’ welfare.
Presenting the second runner-up trophy to the Governor, Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Mr. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, credited the administration’s support for the team’s record-breaking performance.
“For the first time in our history at the Youth Games, Team Edo has returned with 33 gold medals,” Enabulele said. “This would not have been possible without the Governor’s unwavering support and the conducive environment his administration has created for sports to thrive.”
The 9th National Youth Games featured contingents from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Team Edo emerged as one of the top-performing teams, further cementing the state’s growing reputation in youth sports.
