UBTH Commemorates World Mental Health Day with Emphasis on Trauma-Informed Care and First Aid Training

FIC Report (Edo State) – The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) observed World Mental Health Day 2025 with a dedicated focus on enhancing mental health support during emergencies through trauma-informed care and psychological first aid training. The event, held under the theme “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” aimed to raise awareness about the critical need for accessible mental health services in times of crises.

As part of the celebration, the Department of Mental Health at UBTH paid a courtesy visit to the hospital management to discuss strategies for strengthening mental health responses during disasters, pandemics, conflicts, and insecurity.

During the visit, Prof. Ehigiator Adayonfo, the Head of Department, underscored the significant psychological toll that crises impose on affected populations. He emphasized that trauma and anxiety-related issues often surge during such periods, making it imperative to equip Healthcare Providers and Communities with the appropriate skills to respond effectively.

Prof. Adayonfo commended the hospital leadership, led by Prof. (Mrs.) Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, for her unwavering support of mental health initiatives. He called for the expansion of training programs focused on psychological first aid and trauma-informed care, which are vital in providing immediate support and reducing long-term mental health impacts during emergencies.

He further urged the hospital and relevant Stakeholders to increase community awareness about mental health issues and improve accessibility to mental health services, especially during crises. Building strong partnerships among government agencies, NGOs, and community groups was also highlighted as essential for ensuring timely mental health interventions.

In her remarks, Prof. Ize-Iyamu congratulated the mental health department for their efforts and expressed her dedication to integrating mental health services into primary healthcare across Edo State. She reiterated that empowering communities with mental health knowledge and skills is crucial for early intervention and resilience in the face of crises.

The event concluded with the presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph to commemorate the occasion, symbolizing a collective commitment to prioritizing trauma-informed care and psychological first aid training as vital components of emergency response.
