Tinubu, Okpebholo Hailed as Sapele Road Repairs Bring Relief to Businesses in Benin

FIC Report (Edo State) – Traders, business owners and residents along the Sapele Road axis in Benin City have commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, for the reconstruction of the long-abandoned Benin–Sapele Road.

They described the road repairs as a huge relief after years of hardship caused by its poor condition, which affected daily life, slowed business activities and discouraged customers from accessing the area.

A transporter, Mr. Amadi Great, said parts of the road were previously inaccessible, noting that vehicles often got stuck. He recalled that even former Governor Godwin Obaseki was unable to pass through the area at the time. “This place was not accessible at all. Vehicles got stuck here regularly. We thank God that Governor Okpebholo has done it for us,” he said.

A second-hand clothing trader, Mrs. Romary Obazee, said the impact of the road repairs is already being felt by traders. According to her, customers previously avoided the area due to the bad road, but vehicle movement is now smooth and transportation of goods easier. She urged the government to ensure contractors complete the remaining sections quickly, especially with the rainy season approaching.

Also speaking, a battery and car accessories dealer, Mr. Richard Erahbor, recalled that the area used to be flooded and impassable whenever it rained. “Now, the road is good and motorable. We can truly say this government has kept its promise. Business is better because people can now move freely,” he said.

A vulcanizer, Mr. Osaro Nosa, added that the improved road condition has brought back customers and increased daily income for traders operating along the axis.

Residents also praised the Minister of Works, Engr. Dave Umahi, and Governor Okpebholo for personally inspecting the project to ensure quality work and proper use of public funds.

So far, several failed portions of the road have been repaired, while reconstruction continues on other sections. From Ring Road through Sapele Road to the bypass, the improved road has eased traffic flow and revitalised business activities, bringing renewed hope to residents and traders along the corridor.
