FIC Report (Lagos State) – Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in driving economic growth through technology and communication.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the NCC Governing Board, led by Chairman Idris Olorunnimbe, at Lagos House, Marina, Sanwo-Olu described the NCC as a “foremost forward-looking Federal Government commission” in Nigeria.
“We will continue to support NCC. I can assure you that we will do more than what is expected. We are not a government that would be averse to investment,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Technology, communication, and the rest of it are the next growth paths that we want to be part of. We can use technology as a strong enabler to do a lot of catch-up.”
The Governor commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing a team of experts to lead the NCC, saying the commission plays a vital role in Nigeria’s economic development. “We will be expecting so much from this sector. It is a very strong service industry that we believe will be one of the very deep growth paths that can also help us deepen the GDP of our country,” he added.
Chief Olorunnimbe, who described Sanwo-Olu as his mentor, expressed the NCC’s commitment to collaborating with the Lagos State Government to enhance communication infrastructure and services in the state. He noted that the visit was an opportunity to explore ways to strengthen ties between the commission and the state government. He appealed to the Governor to grant free right of way in underserved areas, saying this would incentivize operators to expand services to these communities.
“We would like the Lagos State Government to blaze the trail amongst the other states in Nigeria to grant free right of way in some of those areas in Lagos so that we can use that as an incentive to get the operators to go to those communities and those places,” Olorunnimbe said.
The meeting highlighted the importance of deliberate collaboration and focused governance in driving progress in the telecommunications sector. The NCC delegation’s visit to Lagos State is seen as a significant step towards fostering stronger partnerships and promoting innovation in the sector.
The Lagos State Government has been working to position the state as a leader in technology and innovation, and this visit is expected to further boost efforts to enhance communication systems and infrastructure in the state.
