The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has issued a wake-up call to procurement officers in the public service, emphasising the need for professionalism, integrity, and capacity to adapt to emerging trends and reforms in public procurement.

The Director-General of BPP, Dr. Adebowale A. Adedokun, made this call at a meeting with procurement officers on Grade Levels 14-17, held at the Federal Ministry of Education Auditorium, Abuja.

Adedokun said that the BPP was spearheading several key areas in procurement systems.

He listed the areas to include the implementation of current trends with the Bureau working to align procurement practices with the best global standards, emphasising innovations and digitalisation.

He said that the BPP had introduced a debarment policy to strengthen accountability and discourage unethical practices.

Adedokun said that the Nigeria First Policy, which represents a significant reform, aimed to promote local content, indigenous capacity, and economic growth.

He added that the community-based procurement approach sought to enhance inclusiveness, ownership, and grassroots development.

The DG stated that the National Procurement Officers Management System (NAPOMS) aimed to professionalise procurement practice and improve workforce management; while the Procurement and Contract Management System (P-COMS) was a platform for end-to-end procurement management.

The DG of BPP called on procurement officers to translate these policies into measurable outcomes across government, emphasising that “procurement connects citizens with the government to deliver values and end-users satisfaction.”

The meeting was attended by senior stakeholders, including the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Watson-Jack represented by the Permanent Secretary, Career Management Office (CMO) and the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, represented by his Special Assistant, Mr. Chike Ogbechie, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, represented by Director, Basic Education, Dr. Mrs. Folake Olatunji David and the Director General of Bureau of Public Service Reform (BPSR), Dr. Dasuki Ibrahim Arabi, who all commended the BPP for its efforts in advancing procurement reforms in Nigeria.
