FIC Report (Lagos State) – A massive fire is reported to have engulfed the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, with not fewer than 10 people trapped in the control tower, according to reports.

“There are roughly 10 people trapped at the control tower on the 6th floor and we are making efforts to get them to safety,” an airport official told newsmen.

Firefighters are battling to contain the blaze, suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault. “The fire is still burning but firefighters are here and are fighting to quench it. We’re not sure of the cause yet but we suspect electrical fault,” the source said.

As at 5:15pm a helicopter, suspected to be operated by the police, is hovering above the scene, but its purpose is unclear. “The helicopter is roving around but we don’t know what it is doing here,” the source added.

The airport, currently undergoing a multibillion-naira renovation, has experienced a similar incident before. In September 2023, a fire broke out at the international wing, caused by a suspected electrical spark in the ceiling of the baggage hall.
