Governor Okpebholo Commissions NDDC-Constructed Roads at Edo Polytechnic, Promises Buses and Hostel Improvements

FIC Report (Edo State) – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has officially inaugurated a five-kilometer network of internal roads at Edo State Polytechnic, Usen. The commissioning, which took place on Friday, February 20, 2016, underscores the state’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure and regional development.

The project funded and facilitated by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), features 4.8 kilometers of asphalt-paved internal roads, including a 205-meter dual carriageway at the main entrance, reinforced concrete drainage systems, and a substantial culvert measuring 32 meters by 900 millimeters. This infrastructure aims to improve mobility, safety, and overall campus functionality.

During the ceremony, Governor Okpebholo lauded the NDDC for its intervention, emphasizing that such infrastructure investments are vital for fostering a secure and conducive learning environment. He stated, “This network of roads is more than just asphalt; it signifies better access, connectivity, and safety for thousands of students and staff. Quality infrastructure within educational institutions is essential for academic excellence and security.”

The governor linked the development to the national Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging students to reciprocate the investment through discipline and dedication. “Let this project remind you that the vision of President Tinubu is taking shape. You must match this growth with focus and excellence,” he advised.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strategic partnerships, Governor Okpebholo announced plans for continued collaboration with federal agencies and development partners to foster community growth. He also pledged that Edo State would sustain efforts to deliver impactful projects that improve lives.

In a speech, Minister of Regional Development, Hon. Engr. Abubakar Momoh, praised the partnership between the state government and the NDDC. He recalled his involvement in the legislation establishing the commission 23 years ago and highlighted the significance of such infrastructure projects as evidence of enduring collaboration.

The Commissioner for Education, Paddy Iyamu, highlighted the state government’s support for capacity building, including sponsorships for lecturers to China and students studying abroad. He noted that no student has been sent home over unpaid fees, and that lecturer arrears from 2022 have been cleared. Plans are also underway to send students on full scholarships to Turkey.

Representing the technical aspect of the project, NDDC Executive Director of Projects, Sir Victor Antai, urged stakeholders to maintain the infrastructure to ensure its longevity.

The Polytechnic’s Board Chairman, Hon. Sam Oboh, expressed optimism that renewed infrastructural development would restore the institution’s former enrollment levels, which had declined from over 10,000 students to around 3,000 in recent years. He emphasized that improved facilities could attract more admissions and boost confidence in the institution.

In a show of support, Governor Okpebholo pledged to donate two new buses to ease transportation challenges on campus. He also directed an evaluation of student hostel accommodations to enhance living standards, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to holistic campus development.
