Emberga Assures Benue Women of Gender-Friendly Laws at 2026 International Women’s Day Rally

FIC Report (Benue State) – The Alfred Emberga, Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, on Monday, 9 March 2026, assured women in the state that the Assembly will enact laws that are favourable to women and promote their welfare.

The Speaker gave the assurance while addressing women and civil society organizations during a rally held in Makurdi to mark International Women’s Day 2026.

He encouraged women across the state to actively participate in politics in order to increase female representation in the state legislature.

Rt. Hon. Emberga noted that greater involvement of women in governance would help address issues affecting women and families, adding that the Assembly remains committed to supporting policies that promote gender equality and inclusiveness.

International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on March 8 every year, recognizes the achievements, resilience, and contributions of women while advocating gender equality and women’s rights.

The 2026 celebration was held under the theme “Give To Gain,” which emphasizes the importance of investing in women through education, opportunities, mentorship, and equal rights for the overall development of society.

Also speaking at the event, the Benue State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Mrs. Ikwe, called for increased participation of women in leadership positions across the state. She advocated for reserved seats for women in legislative bodies to ensure adequate representation in decision-making processes.

The Commissioner further assured the Benue State Government of the continued support of women in the state, stressing that empowering women remains critical to social and economic development.

Activities marking the day included a walk rally and advocacy campaigns aimed at promoting women’s rights, leadership, and participation in governance.

The event drew participation from women groups, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders committed to advancing gender equality in the state.
