FIC Report (Edo State) – The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has experienced a remarkable response to its ongoing Cataract Screening and Subsidized Surgery Programme, Organized by the Department of Ophthalmology. The initiative has garnered commendation for the hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor Ize-Iyamu.
In just three days, from March 4th to 6th, 2026, more than 1,000 individuals from across the South-South region of Nigeria have been screened for Cataracts and other Eye Conditions. The Programme, which offers Free Eye Consultations and Screenings, aims to improve access to vital Eye Care Services.
Patients diagnosed with Cataracts are eligible for subsidized Surgeries, alleviating financial barriers and enabling many to regain their sight. The initiative underscores the importance of accessible healthcare and highlights UBTH’s reputation as a Center Of excellence in Ophthalmology.
This Initiative aligns with the Federal Government ’s vision under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to enhance Health Care Delivery and improve the quality of life for Nigerians. The programme offers renewed hope to those suffering from impaired vision, transforming lives through affordable and accessible Eye Care.
