FIC Report (Benue State) – The Governor of Hyacinth Iormem Alia of Benue State has called for sincere collaboration between the North-Central Development Commission and the Benue State Government to accelerate development and address security challenges in the state. The Governor made the call while receiving the Board and Management of the Commission during a courtesy visit at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House Makurdi in Makurdi, Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
Governor Alia emphasized that his administration remains committed to reducing insecurity to the barest minimum and ensuring that displaced persons return to their ancestral homes. According to him, significant progress has already been made in restoring peace across several local government areas that were previously affected by insecurity.
He noted that although the security situation has improved in many parts of the state, constant vigilance remains necessary, describing insecurity as a persistent challenge that requires sustained effort and cooperation from all stakeholders.
The Governor stressed that the resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) remains a top priority of his administration, adding that the people of Benue State deserve peace and stability in order to continue their vital role as the nation’s food basket.
He further identified agriculture, employment generation, and rural infrastructure as key areas where collaboration with the Commission would greatly benefit the state. Governor Alia highlighted the importance of strengthening the agricultural value chain to increase productivity and meet growing demands.
While noting that his administration has prioritized rural development in the state’s current budget, the Governor acknowledged that years of neglect have created enormous gaps that require additional support and partnership.
Governor Alia therefore urged the leadership of the Commission to remain focused and apolitical in the discharge of their responsibilities, emphasizing that introducing politics into such a sensitive institution could undermine its core mandate.
The delegation of the Commission was led by its Chairman, Barrister Cosmos Akighir, and the Managing Director, Dr. Cyril Tseenyil.
