FIC Report (Ebonyi State) – In line with its strategic priority on digital transformation, Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AE-FUNAI) has announced the launch of the Institute for Future Skills and Innovation (IFSI), a new interdisciplinary academic and innovation hub designed to prepare students and professionals for emerging sectors of the global digital economy.
The new institute, according to the Executive Director, Professor Chinedu Ekuma, was developed in partnership with the African Skills and Innovation Network (ASIN) to offer programmes in artificial intelligence, fintech, cybersecurity, digital business, entrepreneurship, and agritech through a technology-enabled learning model.
According to a statement released by the institution and made available to journalist, The launch reflects AE-FUNAI’s broader commitment to technology-enabled education, innovative programme development, and the preparation of graduates for a rapidly evolving world of work.”
The statement added that the University’s strategic plan identifies digital transformation as a major institutional priority and positions technology as a key enabler of academic excellence, research, administration, and student learning.
Professor Ekuma explained that IFSI is designed to combine academic programmes, applied research, and professional training to equip learners with the knowledge, practical skills, and innovative mindset needed in rapidly evolving digital and innovation-driven world.
He added that the institute will operate through a modern digital-first learning model supported by an advanced Learning Management System and global faculty collaboration. Through this approach, students will engage with instructors, researchers, and industry experts from across Nigeria and around the world.
On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of AE-FUNAI, Professor Daniel Nwachukwu, remarked that the establishment of the institute reflects the university’s commitment to preparing students for the realities of the modern global economy.
The world of work is changing at an unprecedented pace, and universities must evolve to prepare graduates for new industries driven by digital technologies and innovation,” said Professor Nwachukwu.
The Institute for Future Skills and Innovation positions AE-FUNAI to equip students with the skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial mindset required to lead in the digital economy.”
He added that the launch of IFSI also aligns with AE-FUNAI’s broader institutional vision of becoming a world-class centre of learning, research, and innovation, and of building an ecosystem of researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology leaders.
The establishment of the Institute for Future Skills and Innovation comes at a critical time for Nigeria, where demand for advanced digital and interdisciplinary skills continues to grow rapidly. Nigeria is home to one of Africa’s fastest-growing technology ecosystems, with expanding sectors in fintech, artificial intelligence, digital services, and innovation-driven entrepreneurship. At the same time, employers across industries continue to report a shortage of professionals with the advanced technical, entrepreneurial, and interdisciplinary capabilities needed to support this transformation.
By developing future-focused programmes and combining academic learning with applied innovation, AE-FUNAI’s new institute aims to help close this skills gap and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to compete in the global knowledge economy.
With its emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, industry collaboration, and digital delivery, the institute is expected to strengthen the university’s position as a forward-looking institution advancing technology-enabled education in Nigeria and across Africa.
