FIC Report (Abia State) – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Sector Command, has expressed deep concern over the growing incidence of motorists driving against traffic, popularly known as route violation, across major roads in the state.
The Sector Commander, Corps Commander Ngozi I. Ezeoma, disclosed this in a statement issued in Umuahia, condemning the dangerous trend and warning motorists against the life-threatening practice.
Mrs. Ezeoma decried the attitude of some drivers who deliberately flout traffic regulations under the excuse that designated turning points are too far, opting instead to take unlawful shortcuts at the expense of public safety.
She emphasized that driving against traffic remains a serious traffic offence with grave consequences, often leading to head-on collisions, avoidable crashes, loss of lives, and destruction of property.
According to the Command, such reckless behaviour not only endangers road users but also disrupts the orderly flow of traffic, contributing significantly to congestion and confusion on the roads, thereby undermining traffic management efforts in the state.
The Sector Commander reiterated that road infrastructure, including designated turning points, is carefully designed to ensure safety and facilitate smooth vehicular movement, urging motorists to adhere strictly to these regulations at all times.
She further warned that offenders would be apprehended and sanctioned in accordance with the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations.
In response to the rising violations, the FRSC has intensified patrol and enforcement operations across critical corridors in Abia State to curb the menace and restore order on the roads.
Motorists were advised to exercise patience, obey all traffic rules, and prioritize safety over convenience, stressing that no journey is worth the loss of life.
The FRSC Abia State Sector Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safer roads and reducing traffic crashes across the state.
