FIC Report (Ogun State) – In a landmark step toward modernizing Nigeria’s policing system and expanding access to quality law enforcement education, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the establishment of a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Erinja, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The President has also approved a special take-off grant of *₦15 billion* to finance the immediate development of the new campus. The intervention fund will be sourced from TETFund’s 2026 allocation and will cover priority infrastructure, academic facilities, student accommodation, and core training assets.

This approval gives effect to the *Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021*, which empowers the Academy to operate as a multi-campus university to meet the growing manpower and professional training needs of the Nigeria Police Force.

Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, stated that the decision followed recommendations from a high-level consultative meeting involving the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Geidam; Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa; the Inspector-General of Police; the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission; and senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Education.

“The siting of the new campus in Erinja was based on careful consideration of student intake capacity, funding realities, academic quality assurance, and the long-term training requirements of the Nigeria Police Force, which is currently undergoing significant recruitment to bolster national security,” Onanuga said.

“President Tinubu believes that expanding the Academy will strengthen institutional governance, entrench modern policing education, and ultimately enhance the safety of all Nigerians. This is a direct investment in human capital for security.”

The Nigeria Police Academy has operated from a single campus in Wudil, Kano State, since its relocation there in 1996. The Erinja campus will be the *first satellite campus established under the 2021 Act*, fulfilling a June 2025 resolution of the House of Representatives which called for decentralization of the Academy across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Established in 1988 and upgraded to a degree-awarding institution by the National Universities Commission in 2012, the Academy is Nigeria’s 37th federal university. It currently runs undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law, sciences, social and management sciences, and humanities, all tailored to law enforcement.

To drive the new vision, President Tinubu has also approved the reconstitution of the 16-member Governing Council of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, with the Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Geidam, as Chairman.

Other statutory members include the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, the Inspector-General of Police, and representatives of the Federal Ministries of Education, Finance, and Justice. Six distinguished Nigerians will represent the geopolitical zones: Babagana Zannah Adam (DCP Rtd.) – North East; Emmanuel Torkuma Manger – North Central; Maigari Abati Dikko (DIG Rtd.) – North West; Dubem A. Obaze (KSM) – South East; Ajibogere Toyin – South West; and Udom Udo Ekpoudom (DIG Rtd.) – South South. The Commandant, Provost, DIG Training, and Registrar will serve as ex-officio members and secretary respectively.

This development aligns with President Tinubu’s *Renewed Hope Agenda* on security, which prioritizes institutional reform, professionalization of the police, and improved welfare and training for officers. By decentralizing police education and committing substantial funding to infrastructure, the administration is laying a sustainable foundation for 21st-century policing in Nigeria.

The Federal Government remains committed to working with state governments, the National Assembly, and all stakeholders to ensure the timely completion of the Erinja campus and its full integration into Nigeria’s national security architecture.
