FIC Report (Imo State) – The NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services (NUIMS) in partnership with Seplat Energy Joint Venture has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing education and youth development with the successful hosting of the 2026 PEARLs Quiz and STEAM Competition Grand Finale in Owerri, Imo State.
The initiative, which targets secondary school students across the company’s operational areas, is designed to promote academic excellence, critical thinking, and innovation among young people.
Speaking at the event, the Director of External Affairs and Social Performance at Seplat Energy Plc, Mrs. Chioma Afe, described the programme as a platform that nurtures intellectual capacity, discipline, and creativity among students. She noted that the competition, which features both written assessments and live quiz sessions, has continued to expand in scope and impact over the years.
She explained that the programme was developed in response to identified educational needs within host communities and is aimed at strengthening learning outcomes while encouraging students to apply knowledge to real-life challenges. She added that the initiative complements other educational interventions by the organisation focused on empowering teachers and promoting science-based innovation.
Also speaking, a representative of NUIMS highlighted the importance of sustained investment in education, noting that the partnership reflects a shared commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators. Participants were encouraged to value the knowledge gained, collaboration, and experience acquired through the competition beyond the prizes.
The Imo State Government, represented by the Commissioner for Petroleum Resources, Barr. Emeka Mgbudem, commended the joint venture for its consistent contributions to education, healthcare, and community development in the state. He reiterated the government’s support for initiatives that promote learning, innovation, and youth empowerment.
Other stakeholders, including government officials and education sector representatives, also lauded the programme for its positive impact on students and communities, noting that it continues to create opportunities for young people to develop relevant skills for the future.
At the end of the competition, Mountain Crest High School emerged overall winner, receiving a project-based grant of ₦5 million, alongside scholarships for participating students and recognition for their teacher. Owerri City Secondary School and Eziachi Secondary School, Orlu, secured second and third positions respectively, while other participating schools were also recognised for their performance.
The event also featured a STEAM innovation segment, where students showcased practical solutions to real-world challenges. Outstanding schools received grants to further develop their projects, reinforcing the programme’s focus on innovation and problem-solving.
The PEARLs Quiz remains a flagship corporate social investment initiative of the NNPC/Seplat Joint Venture, aimed at promoting quality education and empowering young Nigerians with the skills required to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
