FIC Report (Anambra State) – As the world observes World Environment Day, the Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability, highlighting ongoing reforms and interventions under Governor Chukwuma Soludo aimed at tackling erosion, flooding, waste management challenges and the broader impacts of climate change across the state.
Soludo’s administration environmental strategy is anchored on building a cleaner, safer and more resilient Anambra through strengthened policies, effective enforcement and sustained infrastructure development.
A key pillar of his administration’s intervention is the enforcement of the Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law (2024), designed to strengthen environmental governance across the state.
The law prohibits indiscriminate waste disposal, open burning of refuse, poor drainage practices and non-compliance with environmental impact assessment requirements for development projects, empowering relevant agencies to enforce sanitation standards and ensure compliance across both urban and rural communities.
The state government has also intensified efforts to address erosion and flooding, which remain among the most pressing environmental challenges in Anambra.
According to the administration, intervention works are ongoing at over 1,000 erosion sites across the state, including drainage construction, desilting of waterways and rehabilitation of flood-prone communities.
The government has also rolled out community sensitisation initiatives such as “Operation Clear Your Waterways”, aimed at preventing the blockage of natural drainage channels, especially ahead of the rainy season.
These interventions are designed to protect lives and property, while also safeguarding farmlands and infrastructure from the devastating effects of flooding and land degradation.
In the area of waste management, the Soludo administration has strengthened sanitation enforcement across cities and communities in the state, using measures which include stricter monitoring of waste disposal practices, removal of illegal dumpsites and improved coordination of waste collection services as well as intensified public awareness campaigns against indiscriminate dumping and burning of refuse.
In addition, recycling initiatives particularly those targeting plastic waste are being promoted as part of broader efforts to reduce pollution and encourage environmental sustainability as well as integrated climate action into its broader development agenda, emphasizing on sustainable urban planning and environmental protection.
Key initiatives include tree planting campaigns, expansion of green spaces and the incorporation of environmental considerations into infrastructure projects, collaborating with development partners to support erosion control and climate resilience programmes across the state.
The Anambra State Government reiterated that environmental protection remains central to its vision of transforming the state into a modern, livable and economically vibrant hub, noting that ongoing reforms are not only addressing immediate environmental challenges but are also designed to secure long-term ecological stability and sustainable development for future generations.
As World Environment Day is commemorated globally, the state reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening environmental governance, reaccelerating efforts toward a greener and more resilient Anambra.
