FIC Report (Lagos State) – The Lagos State Government has reconfirmed its dedication to fostering a more open, responsible, and sturdy public sector by embedding sustainability tracking throughout all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

This promise was emphasized during the Executive Sustainability Reporting Strategic Alignment Meeting alongside the subsequent stage of the Sustainability Reporting Capacity Building Programme, which aims to embed sustainability concepts deeper into state management and public service execution.

Addressing attendees at the Alausa gathering, Mr. Ope George, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, pointed out that because Lagos is the quickest-expanding metropolis in Africa, it must continually spearhead the implementation of international standards that encourage openness, prudent asset oversight, and enduring progression.

He highlighted that while the State has previously utilized diverse sustainability tracking metrics, it did so in a disconnected fashion. He promised partners that the government will begin consolidating and fortifying its sustainability documentation structure to match global benchmarks, aiming to elevate openness, responsibility, and durable development results.

The Commissioner further noted that just as Lagos has historically pioneered structural advancements, creative solutions, and public sector overhauls, it is now anchoring itself at the vanguard of openness, climate initiatives, and viable governance within Nigeria and throughout the continent.

He stated, “Each sustainability disclosure signifies something greater than mere regulation adherence; it is a pledge of responsibility to our citizens. It showcases our dedication to constructing a Lagos that values the environment, embraces social inclusivity, maintains financial endurance, and stands ready for upcoming hurdles and prospects.”

Supporting the Commissioner’s viewpoints, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, observed that tracking sustainability extends past administrative obligations, defining it as a functional management resource that helps organizations evaluate their influence, control hazards, reinforce responsibility, and reach better-educated choices.

She mentioned that this strategy directly supports Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s objective of establishing a Lagos that is socially welcoming, globally aggressive, and equipped for tomorrow.

“Lagos has perpetually driven progress in administrative creativity, structural growth, and public sector modernization. By adopting sustainability tracking and pursuing technical alliances with pertinent oversight bodies, Lagos shows yet again that it prefers to guide rather than await directives. This represents active management and a tangible reflection of democratic benefits,” Dr. Finnih stated.

The Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), Dr. Rabiu Olowo, explained that by integrating the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS S1 and S2), the State will be equipped to offer more transparent data regarding its ecological, communal, and administrative achievements, including climate hazards, endurance strategies, and public service results.

Furthermore, he pointed out that the advantages of this strategy encompass sharper choice-making, heightened climate endurance, elevated stakeholder trust, and superior functional productivity within state bodies.

He emphasized that obtaining growth financing and environmental capital is heavily dependent on dependable sustainability metrics, noting that Lagos’ adherence to global tracking benchmarks will solidify its standing as a reliable hub for venture capital and alliances.

“Lagos has consistently served as a pioneer, from introducing structural breakthroughs like the Blue Line Rail to revolutionary metropolitan projects such as Eko Atlantic City. Global onlookers already turn to Lagos for creative solutions and advancement. Via sustainability tracking, Lagos is establishing a new standard for openness, climate response, responsibility, and viable leadership throughout Africa,” Olowo stated.

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC), which offers technical assistance for this initiative, praised Lagos State for assuming a pioneering position in sustainability tracking and promised ongoing backing via skill development, tracking standardization, and execution advice.

Attendees were urged to advocate for sustainability tracking inside their own departments, viewing it as a vital stride toward reinforcing governance, elevating citizen trust, and producing superior results for the populace.
