FIC Report (Imo State) – The Nigerian Navy has strengthened its community engagement efforts in Imo State with the provision of free healthcare services and educational materials to residents and students of Izombe Community in Oguta Local Government Area.
The outreach programme, which benefited over 500 residents, underscores the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to promoting community well-being and strengthening civil-military relations through people-centred initiatives.
The medical exercise, held at Izombe Commercial Secondary School, offered free consultations, health screening, treatment and distribution of medications to beneficiaries, including students, youths, pregnant women and elderly members of the community.
Medical personnel from Naval Base Oguta also conducted health sensitisation sessions on the dangers of drug abuse among students and provided education on hypertension prevention and management, particularly for pregnant women and older residents.
Speaking during the outreach, the Commander, Naval Base Oguta, Commodore Sabo Tanko Lengaya, said the initiative formed part of the Nigerian Navy’s non-kinetic approach to enhancing national security through meaningful engagement with host communities.
He noted that the outreach reflects the Navy’s resolve to foster cordial relationships with communities while contributing to the health and educational development of citizens. He further explained that the significance of the outreach lies in the Nigerian Navy’s effort to deepen civil-military relations, especially with host communities, while supporting broader efforts aimed at improving security and national development.
In addition to the medical services, educational materials were distributed to hundreds of students to encourage learning and support academic excellence among young people in the community.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Navy for the intervention, describing the programme as impactful and timely.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Nnena Maduabuchi, commended the Naval Base for providing free medical care and medication, noting that the gesture had strengthened her confidence in the military as a partner in community development.
The outreach programme is one of several activities being undertaken nationwide by the Nigerian Navy to commemorate its 70 years of service, professionalism and contributions to national security and development.
