FIC Report (Benue State) – The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling insecurity across the country through strengthened collaboration with state governments and security agencies, as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, undertook an operational assessment visit to Benue State.
Speaking on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at a town hall meeting held at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi, Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia described the IGP’s visit as a clear demonstration of the Federal Government’s resolve to restore peace, enhance internal security and promote community policing across Nigeria.
Governor Alia commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s sustained support to Benue State in addressing security challenges, noting that the Federal Government’s intervention has strengthened ongoing efforts to protect lives and property.
The Governor reaffirmed Benue State’s commitment to complementing Federal Government initiatives by providing operational vehicles, motorcycles, communication equipment and other logistics to security agencies, while sustaining inter-agency collaboration through intelligence sharing, regular Security Council meetings and coordinated operations.
He pledged the state’s full support for the proposed 14-day security operation aimed at flushing out criminal elements and restoring peace in affected communities.
Governor Alia stressed that the continued attacks on farming communities remain a major threat to national food security, emphasizing that protecting Benue, regarded as the nation’s food basket, is in the overall interest of the country.
On the issue of state police, the Governor expressed support for its establishment, stating that security personnel with adequate knowledge of local terrain, language and culture would enhance intelligence gathering and improve response to emerging security threats.
He urged traditional rulers, community leaders and residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, describing security as a collective responsibility.
Governor Alia also reiterated his administration’s commitment to the safe return and resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs), noting that many had already returned to their communities to participate in this year’s farming season with support from the state government.
He expressed confidence that the renewed collaboration between the Federal Government, security agencies and state governments would significantly improve the security situation and pave the way for lasting peace, stability and sustainable development.
