FIC Report (Lagos State) – The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement (OPL&CE), in collaboration with the Lagos State Bureau of the Public Defender (BPD), has organised a Youth-Police Summit in Badagry Division to strengthen trust, promote peaceful coexistence, and enhance collaboration between youths and the police.
Held at the Area K Command, Badagry, the summit brought together government officials, law enforcement personnel and youth leaders to foster dialogue on citizens’ rights, lawful policing and peaceful civic engagement.
Speaking at the event, the Director of the Bureau of the Public Defender, Mrs. Olubunmi Adenike Adesomoju, emphasised the importance of constructive engagement between youths and security agencies, while highlighting the constitutional and legal frameworks governing policing in Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Director of Citizens’ Rights, Mr. Emmanuel Oluyinka Akande, reaffirmed that peaceful protest is a constitutionally guaranteed right and urged both citizens and law enforcement agencies to uphold the rule of law while maintaining public safety.
Representing the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, the Area Commander, Area K Command, Badagry, ACP Adeleke Smith, encouraged youths to reject social vices and embrace dialogue as a tool for resolving grievances.
Responding on behalf of the youths, the Vice Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos West Chapter, Comrade Sunday David Aladeotan, commended the State Government for the initiative and called for increased youth empowerment to address unemployment and reduce social unrest.
The summit concluded with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to sustain dialogue, strengthen youth participation in governance, and promote peaceful conflict resolution across Lagos State.
