FIC Report (Bayelsa State) – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has commended the Bayelsa State Government for commencing a headcount of persons living with mental illness across the Yenagoa metropolis.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha, the Council described the exercise as a proactive and timely intervention, noting that it demonstrates the responsiveness of the state government to issues affecting public welfare and safety.
The NUJ recalled that the growing concern over persons with mental illness roaming the streets of Yenagoa was raised during its Congress held on June 25, 2026, and subsequently captured in the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting.
According to the Council, the prompt action by Governor Douye Diri, who directed the Ministry of Women, Children Affairs, Empowerment and Social Development to address the situation, is a clear indication that the government is attentive to the concerns of residents and stakeholders.
The Union noted that the headcount is an important first step towards developing a coordinated and humane response to the challenges faced by persons living with mental illness.
It added that beyond improving the environment and promoting public safety, the exercise would help government identify affected persons and facilitate access to appropriate care, treatment, rehabilitation and other social support services.
The NUJ expressed optimism that the initiative would lead to the development of sustainable interventions aimed at protecting the dignity and wellbeing of vulnerable persons, while also addressing the concerns of residents.
The Council further assured the Bayelsa State Government of the Union’s continued partnership and support in promoting policies and programmes that advance public health, safety, citizens’ welfare and good governance.
NUJ Bayelsa also reaffirmed the commitment of journalists to their statutory role as watchdogs of society through objective reportage, responsible advocacy and constructive engagement with government and other stakeholders in the interest of the people.
