FIC REPORT (NASARAWA STATE) – The Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed has urged leaders of political parties to prevail on their supporters to desist from congregating at night, particularly along major highways to ensure peaceful campaign in the State.
CP Shetima Mohammed made the call at a stakeholders’ meeting with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and other political party leaders in Lafia.
The State Police Commissioner noted that supporters of the APC Governorship candidate, Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, and the SDP Governorship candidate, Rtd. IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu were included in the meeting as part of efforts to ensure peaceful political activities and prevent clashes among supporters of the two political parties.
He explained that such gatherings could obstruct traffic, create unnecessary tension and provide opportunities for confrontation between supporters of opposing political parties.
CP Shetima directed the political parties to notify the Police Command ahead of all political rallies, processions and other major gatherings to enable the Command to make adequate security arrangements and prevent possible clashes or breakdown of law and order.
CP Shetima stressed the need for political actors to avoid campaign of calumny, hate speech, inflammatory statements and other forms of provocative rhetoric capable of heightening political tension.
He urged supporters of the parties to desist from unnecessary rivalry and focus their political activities on issues, programmes and policies that will benefit the people.
The Commissioner also warned against the destruction, defacement or removal of campaign billboards, posters and other political materials belonging to opposition parties, noting that such acts could provoke avoidable confrontation and undermine the peace of the State.
The State Chairman of the SDP, Danlami Musa, appreciated the Commissioner of Police for convening the meeting and assured the Commissioner that the party leadership would continue to control and educate its supporters on the need to maintain peace and order.
On his part, the APC State Chairman, who was represented by the party Secretary, Hon. Yarius Dagusa, thanked the Commissioner of police for the initiative, stating that the meeting had further encouraged the party to strengthen its commitment to peace, law and order in all its political activities.
