UBTH Gains NUC Approval to launch BMSc Programs

FIC Report (Edo State) – The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has received approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to offer a Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) program in collaboration with the University of Benin (UNIBEN), beginning with the 2026/2027 academic session. Following this approval, UBTH has established the Governing Council for its College of Nursing Sciences.

The Council’s Inauguration occurred on Monday, August 24, 2026, at the hospital’s Board Room. This move aligns with the hospital management’s decision to create a Governing Body for the College.

The Council is led by Mrs. Abieyuwa Eweka, the Provost of the College, with members including key Stakeholders such as Dr. Emmanuel Osaigbovo, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee; Mr. Aliu Nurudeen Obogai, Director of Nursing Services at Edo State Ministry of Health; Mr. Peter Omionawele, a representative from the Ministry of Education; a representative from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria; Prof. Fidelis Okafor, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at UNIBEN; and Ms. R. M. Eghobamien, Head of the Training Division. Mrs. Esther N. Mordi, the College’s Registrar, serves as the Secretary of the Council.

During the Ceremony, Prof. Idia Nibokun Ize-Iyamu, the Chief Medical Director, highlighted the crucial role of the Governing Council in guiding the college’s strategic direction, ensuring effective oversight, and maintaining quality assurance to meet both national and international standards.

In her remark, Mrs. Eweka expressed gratitude to hospital management for entrusting her with leadership of the Council. She assured that the council would collaborate closely with hospital management, UNIBEN, regulatory agencies, and other Stakeholders to uphold high academic and professional standards. She emphasized that the recent approval of the BNSc program presents a vital opportunity to produce skilled, ethical, and compassionate nurses and committed to the college’s growth, integrity, and excellence.

Attendees included key hospital management Officials such as the Director of Administration, Jim Uwadiae; Deputy Chairmen of the Medical Advisory Committee covering clinicals, training and monitoring, and research and ethics; the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Grace Arheghan; and other senior officials from various departments.

The approval by the NUC to run the BNSc program in partnership with UNIBEN reflects UBTH’s dedication to capacity building and fostering the development of capable, empathetic Nurses who will significantly contribute to Nigeria’s healthcare system and beyond. The admission process for the program is currently underway, offering aspiring nurses the chance to pursue professional University education within UBTH’s academic and clinical environment.
