FIC REPORT (OGUN STATE) – Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to women empowerment and inclusive development, saying the state will deepen collaboration with the United Nations to expand opportunities for women and youths.
The Governor stated this on Tuesday when he received the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Ms. Mohammed was in the state to interface with beneficiaries of the World Bank-supported Nigeria for Women Programme, NFWP, which is being implemented across the 20 local government areas of Ogun.
Abiodun disclosed that no fewer than 100,000 women in the state have so far benefited from the programme, describing it as a strategic intervention to fight poverty and strengthen families at the grassroots.
According to him, the administration deliberately took ownership of the programme because it offered a pathway to reach women who may not have access to political appointments or elective positions.
“When the World Bank brought the Nigeria for Women Project to us, we did not just key into it. We took ownership because we saw the opportunity to touch lives, empower women to support their households and restore their dignity,” he said.
The Governor noted that investing in women translates directly into investment in the economy, adding that economically empowered women are better positioned to provide for their families and drive community development.
He assured the UN delegation that Ogun would continue to provide the enabling environment, infrastructure and policy support required to scale up women-focused initiatives in the state.
In her remarks, Ms. Amina Mohammed commended the Ogun State Government for providing seed funding and for demonstrating political will to implement the programme effectively.
She praised the beneficiaries for their resilience, creativity and enterprise, noting that their progress was proof that with the right support, women can transform households and entire communities.
“You started small and you are growing. What we want is for every woman in Ogun State who can benefit to have that benefit. A nation is as strong as its women,” she said.
The Deputy Secretary-General added that the UN would continue to partner with Ogun State to expand social protection, education, health and economic programmes that directly impact women and vulnerable groups.
The visit also featured an interactive session between the UN Deputy Secretary-General, Governor Abiodun and beneficiaries of the Nigeria for Women Programme.
