FIC REPORT (OGUN STATE) – In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s *Renewed Hope Agenda* to ensure food security, climate resilience and prosperity for Nigerian farmers, the Federal Government in collaboration with the Ogun State Government and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD, has commenced the training of farmers and agricultural extension officers on climate-smart agricultural practices across eight Local Government Areas in Ogun State.
The capacity-building programme is being implemented under the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones, SAPZ Programme, aimed at equipping rural farmers with modern, sustainable and climate-resilient techniques to improve productivity and livelihoods.
Speaking during the training in Abeokuta , the Ogun State Programme Coordinator of SAPZ, Mr. Ibrahim Busi, said the intervention was designed to strengthen the capacity of farmers to adapt to climate change while enhancing the efficiency, sustainability and profitability of agricultural production.
He explained that the training focuses on practical, climate-smart techniques that will help reduce post-harvest losses, promote value addition, and increase yields across key agricultural value chains.
“_The Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu places farmers at the centre of national development. This training is to ensure our farmers are not left behind in the face of climate variability. We are building a new generation of farmers who are productive, resilient and globally competitive_,” Busi stated.
According to him, beneficiaries from Odogbolu, Obafemi Owode, Yewa North and Ijebu East LGAs have already completed the training, while farmers and extension officers from Odeda, Ikenne, Ijebu North East and Yewa South LGAs are the current beneficiaries.
The State Programme Coordinator stressed that the adoption of climate-smart agriculture under the SAPZ programme will enable farmers to improve productivity, build resilience to climate shocks, and mitigate the adverse effects of environmental challenges on food production.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal and Ogun State Governments, in partnership with IFAD, to scale up support for farmers as part of efforts to transform Nigeria’s agricultural sector and guarantee food sufficiency nationwide.
