ABUJA – (Labour and Employment Ministry Report) – The Nigerian Government has assured that the perennial crisis in the nation’s university system which resulted to the on-going strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would soon be permanently laid to rest.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige (Sen) made the declaration at the resumed negotiation between the Federal Government and ASUU which held recently at the Conference Room of the Minister of Labour and Employment in Abuja.
“The President has directed me to pass the night here until all issues that have kept our children away from school are resolved and the strike called off. He has also directed me to impress upon you, the imperative of little sacrifice from all sides, knowing full well that the revenue of the federation has dwindled from what it was before the present administration assumed office,” the Minister said.
Chris Ngige added that President Buhari is very worried about the situation in the university system, indicating his steady and holistic approach to tackling the rot through adequate funding, notwithstanding the dwindling revenue accruals.
He later inferred that the President has directed him to assure them of his determination to reposition the universities as he would do everything possible to cast the present challenges in the Nigerian tertiary education to the dustbin of history.
