Police, NSCDC, NGOs Unveil Safe School Initiative In Imo

FIC REPORT (IMO STATE) – The Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in collaboration with inter-agency non-governmental organisations (NGOs), have launched the Presidential Safe School Initiative in Imo State.

The initiative was inaugurated in a ceremony held at Christian International School, Owerri, Imo state.

While performing the inauguration, the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Abdullahi Wase who was represented by Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Fank Amanchukwu , explained that the protection of schools was a collective responsibility and required the cooperation of all stakeholders.

Mr. Wase said the initiative was designed to strengthen security and reduce incidents of insecurity in schools across the country.
He then called on proprietors and management of public and private schools to work closely with security agencies to ensure the effective implementation of the programme.

He further reaffirmed the commitment of the police to providing round-the-clock protection for schools, while urging school authorities to support preventive security measures.

The Assistant Commandant in charge of Operations NSCDC, Mr. Obinna Anyaberechi, affirmed the continued partnership with other security agencies to ensure the success of the initiative in the state.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Imo State governor Hope Uzodinma on Primary and Secondary Education, Mr. James Nwanyadimo, promised the state government’s dedication to safeguarding schools.
Mr. Nwanyadimo reassured students that the government would continue to provide the necessary assistance to protect their security and welfare.

Mr. Hillary Iheanacho, who is the National Convener of Inter-Agency NGOs, said the Safe Schools Committee would undertake regular inspections of security facilities in schools.

He identified the inspection of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and other security equipment as part of measures to strengthen security and ensure a safe learning environment.

Mr. Iheanacho also urged students to be law-abiding, avoid cultism and other social vices, and respect constituted authorities.

The Proprietor of Christian International School, Dr Robinson Omorogiuwa, expressed appreciation to the security agencies for their efforts towards protecting students and staff.
He promised the school’s full support and cooperation with the Safe School Initiative.

Similarly, the Chairman of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Imo state chapter, Mr. Theo Mbakwe, assured security agencies of the cooperation of private school operators in implementing established security measures.

The sensitization exercise also extended to City School, Owerri, where principals of public secondary schools in the state participated.

Also in attendance were the Chairman of Inter-Agency NGOs in Imo state, Mr. Kennedy Onwunali, and the Permanent Secretary, Imo State Ministry of Education, Dr Benedicta Okororie.
