The President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, Senator Dr. Godswill Akpabio, has assured President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the unwavering support of lawmakers for his administration and second-term ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Dr. Akpabio gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Presidential Campaign Council, where he commended the President’s leadership and ongoing reforms, describing his re-election bid as deserving of broad-based support.

Addressing the President, Senate President Akpabio said the National Assembly remained firmly behind him and would not allow attempts to undermine his administration through the legislature.

“Mr President, it’s because of your personae, because you’ve done well and you deserve a second term in office,” he said.

The Senate President noted that Nigerians were increasingly appreciating the reforms being implemented by the Tinubu administration, expressing confidence that the President would continue to enjoy the cooperation of the legislature.

“What is happening tonight is the fact that Nigerians are seeing your reforms, and Nigerians have also seen the fact that nobody can break through the National Assembly to destabilise you. We are solidly behind you,” Dr. Akpabio declared.

He disclosed that several lawmakers had expressed interest in participating in the activities of the Presidential Campaign Council, describing the enthusiasm as an indication of growing support for the President across political divides.

“In fact, when I was coming, a lot of senators were dragging my clothes and said, ‘SP, are you leaving us behind? Let us just come with you,’” he said.

Distinguished Senator Akpabio consequently sought the President’s permission to attend subsequent gatherings with more lawmakers, including members of the opposition parties in the National Assembly.

“Your Excellency, I want your permission to come next time with the Minority Leader and those in the minorities in the National Assembly,” he stated.

He specifically mentioned the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, among lawmakers who had indicated interest in joining the gathering.

The Senate President described the composition of the Presidential Campaign Council as historic and unprecedented, noting that it brought together prominent political figures from different parties in support of President Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

According to him, the development demonstrated the possibility of building national consensus and strengthening cooperation beyond political affiliations.

“This is historic, and this is uncommon. This has never happened in the history of our democracy since 1999, that the sitting President will constitute his Presidential Campaign Council with almost all the parties in Nigeria, inclusive,” he said.

Senator Akpabio expressed optimism that the broad-based political participation would provide a foundation for what he described as a unity government during the President’s second term.

He congratulated President Tinubu and the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, on the composition of the council, while commending political leaders from other parties for their willingness to participate in the campaign effort.

The Senate President particularly acknowledged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA); and Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State, identified in the address with the Accord Party.

He maintained that the participation of political leaders from different backgrounds demonstrated that good governance and national development should transcend partisan considerations.

The Senate President also commended Governor Soludo for his involvement in the campaign effort, expressing confidence that his experience and contributions would be valuable to the President and the country’s development.

Drawing attention to an analogy earlier presented by the Anambra State Governor, the Senate President urged Tinubu to appreciate the importance of continuity and encourage members of the National Assembly to support his re-election.

“He said, if the clothes is not torn, why try to mend it? If you try to mend it, you are doing what? You are going to tear the clothes,” Akpabio recalled.

The Senate President further advised serving governors to remain committed to the welfare and development of their respective states rather than becoming distracted by ambitions for other political offices.

He reminded them that the constitutional provision allowing governors to serve a maximum of two terms of four years each should encourage them to concentrate on delivering meaningful development to their people throughout their tenure.

“And for my brothers who are governors, I want you to know that you must not abandon your people,” he cautioned.

“I did eight years as a governor. And the Constitution says you should do eight years. There’s no need for you to start eyeing another position that is not available,” Akpabio added.

The Senate President reiterated his support for President Tinubu’s second-term ambition, expressing confidence that sustained cooperation among political leaders would strengthen national unity and advance the country’s development aspirations.
