Abuja (Min. of Helath) – The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire has commended the Canadian Government for her financial support and fostering stronger collaboration with partners towards improving the quality of services rendered to young Nigerians, especially adolescents and women in Northern Nigeria.
Dr. Ehanire made this commendation during the Project Steering Committee (PSC) meeting of the Global Affairs Canada (GAC)-Funded Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Project for Adolescents and Women in Northern Nigeria, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, Abuja.
Speaking, the Minister informed that the objectives of the Canadian funded project include; increasing access to improve quality health services for women and adolescents girls; and to economically empower them, particularly at the rural level to make informed choices about their reproductive health.
He charged the committee to ensure that at the end of the meeting, far reaching decisions would be made to prioritize activities and build consensus on other relevant issues specifically on the programme in States and develop a work plan for the year 2020.
The Minister identified with the Project in: Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara and Gombe States which have been on-going for over one year, saying that these would positively affect the lives of Nigerian citizens in the various States.
Earlier, the Principal Agent of Development Director (GAC) in Nigeria, Catherine Hughes, applauded the Ministry of Health, State Governors and their officials for their commitment and leadership which has led to the strong results on ground.
She maintained that Global Affairs Canada’s strong partnership with CHAI, Save the Children and the Nigerian Government has been a key factor in achieving such a positive impact.
“We know there is more work to do and every bit of extra effort from all stakeholders makes a world of difference for project beneficiaries while building the foundation for a stronger health system moving forward and reaching the poorest and most vulnerable,” she advised.
