Abia Govt to intervene in Erosion menace in Abia North, liase with FG for permanent solutions

The Abia State House of Assembly  passed a resolution urging the State government to intervene in the numerous erosion menace ravaging some parts of the Abia North Senatorial District as well as liase with the Federal Government for permanent solution to end the Ecological problems.

This followed a motion raised by Member representing Bende North State Constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Ibekwe on the Immediate intervention of the State government on incessant erosion menace in his Bende North State Constituency.

Hon. Ibekwe said that the increasing rain fall has affected and aggravated the Ecological havoc and gully erosion menace in the constituency adding that his constituents are predominantly farmers that contribute immensely in the production of food in the state.

He further stated that the topography of the area is hilly, porous with sandy soil and vulnerable to erosion activities.

He therefore call on the Ministry of Works and Environment through the House to immediately embark on-the-spot assessment visit to the affected areas with the view of proffering solutions, mandate the relevant Agencies in the State to commence immediate palliative work on the affected areas to enable his Constituents assess and transport their farm produce and make life easier in this rainy season.

Ibekwe also drew the attention of the State to urgently bring the erosion  menace to the attention of Federal Ministry of Environment, NDDC, and Federal Ecological Office.

Other Members who spoke in favour of the Motion includes the Deputy Speaker  and Member representing Umuahia East , Rt Hon. Austin Meregini, Umuahia North State Constituency, Hon. Anderson Akaliro, Hon. Egwuonwu Mandela Obasi of Ohafia North State Constituency, Hon. Lucky Johnson of Isuikwuato State Constituency

The House further entertained a Petition requesting for urgent intervention on the activities of Total E&P and NNPC Exploration and Production Limited in Owaza Community in Ukwa East Local Government Area and also entertained another petition against the Deputy General Manager Abia State Road Traffic Safety Management Agency formerly known as TIMAAS, Mr Kelechi Smart Uwakwe for an alleged abuse of Office, Harassment, intimidation and refusal to pay workers salaries for several months.

The Speaker constituted a 7 man Committee to deliberate on the matter and revert back to the House within two weeks.

The House however adjourned plenary to reconvene at a later date.
