As Oyo State Marks Golden Jubilee, Makinde Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive Growth, Strong Institutions

FIC Report (Oyo State) – Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a better future for Oyo State anchored on strong institutions, inclusive development, youth empowerment, sustainable growth and lasting stability.

The governor made the pledge on Monday at the opening ceremony of the Oyo State at 50 celebrations, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, Monday 26th, January 2026.

Makinde described the golden jubilee as both a moment of celebration and an opportunity for reflection, renewal and recommitment to the progress of the state in the decades ahead.

According to him, the anniversary goes beyond marking the passage of time, as it represents the identity, resilience and collective journey of the people of Oyo State over the past 50 years.

The governor noted that the celebration holds deep personal meaning for him, having spent his entire life in the state.

He said his administration remains focused on ensuring that the next 50 years deliver greater prosperity, fairness, dignity and hope for all citizens through a competitive economy, quality education, modern infrastructure and institutions that outlive any single administration.

Makinde recalled his formative years in Oyo State, attributing part of his personal growth to policies such as the free education programme of the late Chief Bola Ige, which he said laid the foundation for his future.

“This golden jubilee is more than a milestone. It is a moment of reflection, responsibility and renewal,” the governor said.

He added that tributes shared by residents and friends of the state on the digital tribute wall had reinforced the belief that the true strength of Oyo State lies in its people.

Reflecting on governance over the years, Makinde said the state has moved from promises to performance, citing achievements in infrastructure development, education, healthcare, fiscal discipline and economic expansion.

He stressed, however, that the focus must remain on securing the future.

“As we mark this golden jubilee, we recommit ourselves to a future built on strong institutions, sustainable growth, empowered young people, inclusive development and lasting stability,” he said.

The governor further pledged continued commitment to peace, security, good governance and fiscal responsibility, assuring that Oyo State would remain safe, stable and open for business.

Makinde also expressed appreciation to individuals and groups who have made sacrifices over the years to ensure the safety, security and prosperity of the state.

In his goodwill message, former Governor of Oyo State and Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, commended past military administrators, civilian governors and political leaders for their contributions to the growth and development of the state.

He noted that the collective sacrifices of past leaders and citizens helped shape Oyo State into what it is today.

Other goodwill messages were delivered by the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin; the Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice Iyabo Yerima, represented by Hon. Justice R. B. Akintola; Chairman of BOVAS Group, Arc. Segun Bamidele; and Chief (Mrs) Elizabeth Akinyele.

They commended Governor Makinde for institutionalising the Oyo at 50 celebration, noting that the initiative ensures the legacies of past leaders and the contributions of citizens are properly acknowledged.

They also praised the governor’s achievements in workers’ and pensioners’ welfare, infrastructure development, economic growth and security, describing Oyo State as a pacesetter under his leadership.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Oyo State at 50 Anniversary Committee, Hon. Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, said the celebration provides an opportunity to honour successive administrations that laid foundations in governance, education, agriculture, infrastructure and public service.

He described Governor Makinde’s leadership as people-centred, highlighting improvements in education, healthcare, security, internally generated revenue, agriculture and agribusiness.

The event attracted a large gathering of dignitaries, including former First Lady of Oyo State, Chief (Mrs) Mutiat Ladoja; Deputy Governor, Barr. Bayo Lawal and his wife; representatives of past military administrators and former governors; lawmakers at federal and state levels; traditional rulers; religious leaders; labour leaders; service commanders; commissioners; permanent secretaries; and other top government officials.
